There were many low points of 2012. The year brought us Willard Mitt Romney’s seventh consecutive year of running for president, after all. Someone gave JJ Abrams a new TV show. Carly Rae Jeppsen became a public figure. Old, white, Republican men who think that Jesus rode around on a triceratops publically discussed womens’ reproductive systems. It ended with the whole “fiscal cliff” kabuki.
All of those things, however, pale in comparison to something that most people probably didn’t even notice. I give you the lowest point of the year 2012:
If you got a car, and
Somewhere to sleep
Someone who loves you
Something to eat
I would say you’re doin’ better than most
But maybe not as well as some
-Soundgarden, “Halfway There”
Insipid, obvious pabulum is well below the threshold of what I expect from Soundgarden in general and Chris Cornell in specific. I mean, the man was once the master of a completely opaque but still somehow poetic and descriptive musical statement. Let’s take a look:
I was crying from my eye teeth and bleeding from my soul
And I sharpened my wits on a dead man's skull
I built an elevator from his bones
Had to climb to the top floor just to stamp out the coals
And the candle was burning yesterday
Like somebody's best friend died
And I've been caught in a mind riot
-Soundgarden, “Mind Riot”
Heard it from another room
Eyes were waking up just to fall asleep
Love's like suicide
Dazed out in a garden bed
With a broken neck lays my broken gift
Just like suicide
-Soundgarden, “Like Suicide”
Follow me into the desert
As thirsty as you are
Crack a smile and cut your mouth
And drown in alcohol
Cause down below the truth is lying
Beneath the riverbed
So quench yourself and drink the water
That flows below her head
-Soundgarden, “Burden in My Hand”
Sleeping with a full moon blanket
Sand and feathers for my head
Dreams have never been the answer
And dreams have never made my bed
Dreams have never made my bed
-Chris Cornell, “Seasons”
So…yeah. The whole “Soundgarden getting back together” thing was pretty high on my list of things that might be awesome. Last summer I saw Soundgarden at the UIC Pavilion right after I moved back and it was awesome. I have not been enamored of their new stuff, though, and I like King Animal less every time I hear it. The quoted lines from “Halfway There” are really all I need to explain why.

Top put up. I await reading more. Cheers
