On this day in history something important happened. The world has changed completely because of it.
I feel compelled to talk about it because I have a blog and that is what bloggers do. It helps, I suppose, that my blog is nominally a history-related blog, so I can claim a sort of connection. Still, even at that this particular day in history has little or nothing to do with what I've been talking about, so it's totally out of the blue.
But, see, the thing is that this day in history was really, really important. Therefore people will talk about it. I must talk about it, as if I don't and other do people will think that I don't know anything about it or, worse, that I don't care. And it would be terrible to be seen as either ignorant or indifferent.
So today I talk about how important today was in history a long time ago. It, admittedly, is not an important or memorable anniversary of this day in history, but it's still an anniversary. I have nothing to add to the conversation, but it's still important for me to add nothing on this particular non-significant anniversary of this day in history that everyone knows about and will undboubtedly see mentioned at least once before lunch and many times after. There will be special Google headers and the local news will have local interest stories about how local people are commemorating this event, even if there isn't a single local person who was there on that original day when this day become important so many non-round-number years ago.
Now you have been reminded yet again of today's importance to history. Consider the solemn importance for just a moment. And realize that our world is the way it is because of that important thing that happened on this date a long, long time ago.
...and they'll say the same thing about 9/11 in sixty years. Sigh. The cruddy thing about themes in history is they're so &%^! repetitive.

It is for this reason that I consider the fact that Blizzard chose the 7th to be their release date for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm to be in poor taste.

I thought the same thing, Big A.
