I've been a bit busy with end-of-year goals stuff, so thoughts longer than about two sentences are far more difficult for me this week than I'd thought. So how about rather than read while I prattle on, you go and read this, instead. It's proof positive that if you want intelligent analysis of the state of the United States, you're well served to go with All-Jazeera.
Wait. Did I really just say that? And did I really just MEAN that?
Fuck. The United States is screwed. Oh, right, that's the subject of the post I would have written today if I had brain cells left running. So, um, yay for Al-Jazeera, then?
And yay for Qatar, huh? Pepper spray notwithstanding, I still prefer the climate in California...
Thanks for the article. That's the first time I've seen someone clearly qualify the evolving connections between private interest and school administration. Developments over the past decade have left me absolutely livid with my Alma Matter's rapidly evolving admissions policies. I'm learning to see "student aid" as synonymous with serfdom. If something doesn't change direction in the next decade, I might find myself actively discouraging my kids from going to college, and sending them off to union trade apprenticeships instead. I wonder who would feel the pressure if the student body spent a semester on strike?
Cheers to those brave kids up at Davis and Berkeley. I hope the right people are watching.

Excellent (and disturbing) article. Thanks.
I might go even further than you, Janet. The Higher Education Racket is increasingly evil and part of the effort to turn us into serfs comepting amongst ourselves. The whole concept that one has to have an advanced degree in order to get a basic white collar job is terrible.
